Steps to PE

Been searching through this sub for as much information as I could for getting into private equity. From what I gather it's best to study finance or accounting, do internships, then 2-3 years in IB after college before even being looked at for a job in PE. I also have seen a mix that where you go to school is more important over what you study?

I'm 23 and going to college for the first time this August for finance. Joined military straight out of high school so paying for school is not an issue for me. (I actually have 8 years available) My question is what could set me up for success in getting into IB first. How important is the school that you go to and what are some ideal ones? What would/did you do to set yourself up for success?

Appreciate any insight as this is all very new to me and honestly had no clue what PE was up until a few weeks ago.
