When you were in secondary school were you allowed to pick a certain amount of subjects?

I was only allowed to pick 6 but others I knew were allowed to pick 9, does that mean they will do better than me in life or that they are smarter/better? I just remembered about this and remember feeling disappointed in myself when others were allowed to do higher amounts and I wasn't
