Smuggler's Cove Category Numbers and tasting my collection

Hey folks! I'm really new to Tiki and to be honest have never been much of a drinker. But I've recently caught the tiki bug, and have acquired quite a few different rums and ingredients to make fun cocktails with. I've been primarily using the Smuggler's Cove book, which is an absolute treasure chest of knowledge. For those that haven't read it, an amazing thing it does is it categorizes rums and uses those categories in the recipes rather than a specific rum. Unfortunately for me, I have really struggled to find the rums the book lists and categorizes. Additionally, I don't actually know what I'm doing, at all, so I am entirely dependent on the recipes I find, and I wanted to get better acquainted with all my ingredients and go from amateur to novice tiki drink maker. So, I did just that. I went through every shelf stable ingredient I have and gave it a taste test, and if it was a rum, I guessed on a SC category number. I'm a firm believer if you ever want to know the truth to something, you state it incorrectly on the internet. So with that, I turn to you fine folks and hope you can correct any numbers I got wrong, and suggest some new rums for me to try that may fill out my collection.

Some of the highlights from the tasting I thought worth mentioning:

  • Favorite Rums: Plantation Original Dark, Bacardi Reserva Ocho, Appleton Estate Rare Casks, Appleton Estate Signature, Mount Gay Black Barrel.
  • Worst Rums: Coral Bay Silver, Doctor Bird, Sailor Jerry
  • I hate coffee with a passion, but Kahlua is actually pretty damn tasty.
  • Angostura bitters tastes like shit, which isn't suprising, but Orange bitters from the same company is quite lovely and not just the normal bitters with orange flavor.
  • Rose's Grenadine is way better straight than Collins.
  • Curacau, Triple Sec, and Cointreau all taste incredibly similar to me. Are they the same thing?

The full list, including my uneducated tasting/smelling notes can be seen here: Airtable Link

I pulled out some of the rum stuff minus my tasting banter for the folks that can't be arsed.
