Need help understanding a step in the pattern

I am currently making the lace part of some gloves, The step that I am currently on states that:

To do this, we continue knitting the next row with the same thread - air loops. Alternate 8 ch through 4 columns, then through 5 columns of the previous row. So to the end of the row.

I am confused by the wording of this, is it saying that I need to alternate between skipping 5 and 4 stiches?
