Is a spiral fracture the most painful kind of femur fracture?
41M. I got a long spiral fracture of the middle third of my right femur, from a cycling accident. It was repaired with an intramedullary nail. I know that the femur is generally considered the most painful bon to break, but some of the nursing staff seemed to think I was in more pain than most people with hip/femur fractures, both before and after surgery. One possibility is that I have poor pain tolerance, but I've had plenty of other injuries and nobody has suggested this before (I do seem to be unusually prone to tendon/joint pain, but that runs in the family and seems to be a separate issue). So I'm wondering if the nature of the fracture itself explains the greater-than-usual pain. Naively, this would seem to make sense: with a long spiral fracture, any movement would cause two large surfaces of damaged bone to rub together. But I haven't been able to find any research on this.
