Phone Won't Start

Hi. Yesterday, my son's Nexus 6P got really hot and shut itself down. Now, we can't get it to boot up. I can reach the screen with the little Android guy laying on its back, but nothing happens if I select 'Recovery Mode' or 'Reboot bootloader'. The only options which seem to work are 'Power off' or 'Barcodes'. Any advice greatly appreciated.
