Since mulatto seems to be an outdated and offensive term nowadays what should we use to refer ourselves?

Growing up I never looked at that word as oppressive or even offensive towards me. If anything I would associate that word with sounding like a coffee flavor than anything else, even joking about it when I go to somewhere like Starbucks. But when I heard that it's outdated (at least in the western countries since i believe Latin countries still use it to refer to someone that's black and white) it made me wonder what term can be used to replaced it?

Mixed race/multiracial would be the proper but I feel like it's too fluid and can describe pretty much anyone that's of two different racial backgrounds. Maybe Afro-european might be the next thing?
