r/coheed's Song of the Day #70: Number City

So fun. Sooooo fun. Number City is fairly deep, but one may not notice on first listen. It reminds me of a dirty B-52's plus The Police guitar beat with a dance club bass groove around it. Then the horns. Honestly, none of us ever would expect a Coheed song with a brass section that works. Coolest part to me is that the chorus sounds like a conversation taking place directly after a car crash.

"Honey--"

"Release my heart!"

"If you... Honey!"

"Release my heart, you let me go"

Right? Right? >_>

Apparently, Travis told Claudio the original version of the song sucked, and they ended up reworking it into this bad boy.

The Fiction- This song is a flash-forward from the award ceremony in "The Hard Sell"; ambulances arrive at the scene of a gruesome car accident and the EMTs survey the surroundings. The driver of a small car lost control and slammed into a huge truck; ejecting driver and passenger from the car and leaving both with critical injuries.

Though Sirius is in critical condition, he is still able to remain conscious long enough to see that Meri is in a considerably worse state. The EMTs test her blood for the transfusion she is clearly going to need, but discover something else in her bloodwork -- she was pregnant. As the EMTs load the couple into ambulances, Meri's heart stops and they attempt to bring her back to life.

The Real- It seems like this is just a precursor to the feelings explored in Gravity's Union. It's about the aftermath of a car crash, explored through the eyes of emergency responders. It's one of the more conceptual songs of the album.

The Part- I absolutely love the chorus, but the end transition into Gravity's Union is what makes it for me. It's so weird and good.
