what made you become a school counselor and what do you love most about your job?
Hi f24 and I just accepted a job as a university guidance counselor at a high school I’ve been working at for the past 8 months. I started as an admin assistant and worked closely with grade 12 students on immigration documents/applications (it’s a boarding school).
The position opened up because the last counselor had to unexpectedly leave and I shot my shot because I felt like it aligned better with my goals than an admin did. They saw something in me and decided to pick me out of all the (other more experienced) candidates with counselling experience. I work part time as a peer mentor with kids on the spectrum and have really grown to love working with youth over the years especially in student services. I’ve always been in student services (moreso in higher ed) and ive been loving working at a highschool. Ironic cause I couldn’t WAIT to leave high school at 18 aha!
Anyway, im really nervous about this new position because I’ll be spending the next few weeks learning everything from scratch. I also did a completely different curriculum than the one they’re offering at the school im at. (I did IB they offer AP) so, I’ll have to really learn from ground 0. I know I have it in me and im up for the challenge but it would be really comforting to know what brought you you guys to the world of counselling and what makes you excited about work? Is there any room to grow and what other opportunities have you guys come across in this field?
Thanks!
