Questions about privacy with Ubiquiti/UniFi equipment
I've just completed my home setup using Ubiqiti gear, and I'm having some buyers remorse because I didn't read the privacy policy. According to their policy, they can essentially collect any data they want from my network and do whatever they want with it. I do like all the features of the product and the UI looks great, but there is no reason for a networking hardware manufacture to know what kind of car I drive, what kind of refrigerator I have, what kind of TV I have, etc. And the claim that they can use your information "enforce our terms of service", seems like they are reserving the right disable your equipment remotely as well.
Apologists will say, "They wouldn't do that though", "They don't plan on using that data", "Who cares, google knows more about you", etc. This is all nonsense. The point is I sent them a bunch of money, and I'm not expecting to get spied on and monetized in return. Simply having this ability is offensive to me for something as expansive in my home as my network. Privacy is something I value a lot, and every day I find myself caring more about it than the previous day.
I was planning to turn off remote access once I had everything set up and running, then relying on a VPN to access the console when away from home. Then I realized this won't stop the gateway or any of their devices from pushing the data they collect to their servers. Is there anything I can do about the gateway and other Ubiquiti devices secretly pushing harvested data to their servers?
I do think having remote access to your network through THEIR website is kind of insane, but also kinda neat at the same time. Now I wonder though, does turning off remote access REALLY turn off all ability for anyone at Ubiquiti to reach into my network? Meaning its literally not possible even with a gun to their head, and not even the most angry rogue employee could make his way in.
My last question is around configurations. I found 2 places where there are scheduling settings for configuration backups. The Network application and OS Settings. Are these backup configurations stored in Ubiquitis cloud? And if they are, are the VPN settings stored with them? Because if they have my VPN settings and credentials, then it doesn't matter if I disable remote access does it? It really would be their stuff at that point and I just paid a grand to rent it.
I think I just have to concede that I made a mistake. I was dazzled by the slick UI and feature set and didn't read the fine print. I'm coming from a 15 year stint of running DD-WRT based firmwares on my routers and really didn't even consider that I could fork over a bunch of money to a company and then have that company say "We can technically take whatever we want from your network and do whatever we want with it". Didn't even cross my mind. I was just looking to try a best in breed prosumer product for a change. I plan on moving in 2 years or so, and I will be be building a much bigger network at that point. I'll have another opportunity to try again then I suppose.
