Does anyone else struggle with house guests?

General Discussion/Question

I have ADHD and I'm fairly certain that I'm also autistic. It's 7am and I've been unable to sleep because I was supposed to have a friend who is in a tough spot stay over for a few nights, and I've just realized that stressing about it is likely the reason I haven't fallen asleep yet. So I texted him to cancel. I feel really bad about it, but I think I'm too overstimulated to handle a guest right now.

I'm thinking about:

  • Cleaning up after myself. I'm by no means a slob but my period is about to start and that's always extra
  • How I'll feel guilty only cooking for one with a guest over, but I also do not have any desire to cook for two. I typically love cooking for friends but I'm too stressed about other stuff to enjoy it right now.
  • Whether or not he'll close the toilet lid when he flushes (it icks me out when people don't because my toilet splatters and then my bathroom just feels dirty)
  • The fact that I never really sleep soundly when someone else is in my house
  • Our completely opposite sleep schedules and how I'll have to start being quiet at a certain hour
  • The fact that my guest room is also my favorite place in the house to hang out

These things often make guests feel borderline overwhelming to me, but I can usually handle it + having a friend over for a few days can be nice. But I have so many other stressors on right now and I think this was about to tip me over the edge—hence the insomnia.

I partially made this post because it struck me that my mom has always vehemently hated having guests over, which has caused me to wonder (not for the first time) if she's ND too. She has a ton of "quirks" and is quite routine dependent. Doesn't believe in mental health care very much, though.

This is a bit of reflection, but I'm also curious if anyone else struggles with house guests. I should mention that I also struggle with being a guest in someone's home.
