Alternatives to having the teens fight.

During Tory and Sam's fight, in season 5, Daniel stops the fight. Daniel tells Tory that they will figure out another way to determine who is captain.

Does anyone have any idea how Daniel and Johnny could have come up with another way to determine who should be captain-other than fighting?

I am not debating whether Daniel should have stopped the fight then and there, but what exactly could Daniel have done as an alternative? I feel the race in 6x04 was not a great way to pick your last fighters--all it would take is one person to take the wrong path and that would be it.

If not a fight between Sam and Tory, how would you solve who is captain?
