Keeping diagnosis is suddenly hard

Seeking Empathy

Are there any other early diagnosed people who are suddenly getting challenged about their diagnosis by doctors? This has been happening to me recently and I’ve been diagnosed since 2008 at 9 years old. It used to be that you could tell a new doctor that you’ve been diagnosed with adhd and they would just say “okay”, write it down, and that was it. The first time I was questioned was at the psych ward in 2019. I saw the weekend psychiatrist, which was my first psychiatrist meeting there. The first thing he did was ask me about my psych history, and when I got to adhd he immediately interrupted me and said “how do you know that’s not bipolar?” Idk maybe because I was assessed rigorously in and out of school for a month, was referred only for inattention, and OH I was 9! Luckily his word was not final and I didn’t get my diagnosis taken away, but it was still nerve wracking.

Then most recently I saw my new psychiatrist yesterday and asked to be put back on adhd medication. She sent me an ASRS self report questionnaire which made me think she was suspicious of my legitimacy. I scored a 30 on inattentive part and a 24 on the hyperactive part. I told her I had the inattentive type but I am concerned that even with that, I still possibly scored too low on the hyperactivity part. I put that I rarely talked too much (thanks social anxiety) which may have hurt my score. I am extremely worried that my score isn’t high enough and I’m honestly not sure what to do if she decides I don’t have it. Like I don’t know if I’ll just be denied meds or if it’ll be erased from my record. After looking at what recently diagnosed people have been saying, it seems like nowadays your diagnosis hinges on snap judgments and one wonky questionnaire result.

In between those two events it’s been a lot of mild grilling even by people like GI docs and whatnot. Like it’s so shocking that I am afab and have an adhd diagnosis.
