Should I Try Therapy with my Nmom?
My Nmom has mentioned going to therapy together. Every time she did this in the past it would be during a fight and then after she would say "oh we don't need it", but a few years ago I stopped talking to her for about three years. Since we've been in touch again she is clearly walking on eggshells around me, she doesn't act the same to me that she did before but I can tell she isn't being herself at all. I still feel the way I did before around her, maybe even more emotionally removed. She still talks about people and herself the same way. She is still clearly the same person in a lot of ways she was before, but it's like she's holding them back in front of me for fear I won't talk to her again. She has said her biggest fear is I won't talk to her anymore, which sounds like a dream to me.
She recently said we should get a therapist again because she isn't sure how to say certain things to me, I am hating this current fake, pretend relationship she and i have. I am so so hesitant of going to therapy with her. It seems futile in some respects, I barely see the woman as my mother anymore, so why lay out this trauma for her to undermined again. But on the other hand, should I call her bluff? say, yes, let's finally try therapy together and get in a shared space where I can lay it all out on the table with a mediator there? I'm know sometimes it isn't wise to go to a therapist with a narcissist, I really just don't know what to do as my next step but I know I need something to change. Any advice would help.
