Anyone actually get the job after following up for updates?

Had a final interview for a role last Wednesday, still haven't heard back so I sent an email to HR asking if there was an update. HR said they'll follow up with the hiring manager for interview feedback.

It got me thinking though, I've never been successful after not hearing back within a day or 2 after the final interview. Has anyone actually got a job after not hearing back for a while and chasing HR for updates? Surely if they wanted to offer it to you they'd move fast and if you were a backup candidate they'd at least tell you they're still interviewing?
