Leaving a job I love doing with people I enjoy working with for more money?
I have been at my current job for four years now. I like the work I do, feel challenged, WFH, have freedom to complete my work without oversight and micromanaging, etc. I used to roll my eyes at the “corporate culture!” thing, but my company is actually really cool. My direct manager also helps make the job and life better.
Early in my tenure I left the company to pursue more money and a title and it SEVERELY bit me in the ass. Company I switched too were grossly work obsessed and not kind people (don’t need my coworkers to be my best friends but was bad). I asked the company I love to take me back 6 months later and they were happy to do so (with a bump in pay as well). At the time I told myself “if I just get back to my old shop I’d be so thankful I’d never want to leave again”….
Now I’ve been approached for a role similar to my current one. I’d have more responsibility and likely more work, but there is also ability to build out a department and become a team lead and then manager. The role is also remote. The ONLY reason I’m really torn here and ignoring the history repeats itself trope is the amount of money involved.
I currently make about $110k with a $10-$20k bonus based on company performance. The new role salary would be $150-$160k base plus potential bonuses as well. I’m torn because obviously taking almost a 50% base increase is always going to be an insane proposition. I’m just trying to figure out if the risk in potentially inheriting a miserable situation like I did before is worth it.
Would really appreciate some guidance!
