Weaponizing Jewish suffering

Debate

I should preface this by saying this will undoubtedly be a controversial conversation, but a necessary one.

I think there is often a disconnect between some diaspora Jews and some Israel Jews on more than one issue. One specific issue I think exists uniquely within some sectors of the Israeli right is the tendency to utilize Jewish suffering as a political tool.

I think many non-Jews readily levy this claim that we weaponize the Holocaust to garner support/sympathy from the world. In the diaspora, this is rarely ever the case and I'd go a step further and say that most of those claims are antisemitic nonsense.

However, I think this unsavory tactic has emerged in one way or another in Israel. I recall a quote from Shulamit Aloni where she railed against the Israeli government sending Jewish kids to Auschwitz tours, as she believed it was being used to embolden ultranationalists. This issue has seemingly been around for multiple decades in Israeli society.

I believe it is a bit naïve to assume that a Jewish nation, in which being Jewish is the default, is not susceptible to issues which plague every other nation. The reality of a diaspora Jew and an Israeli Jew are extremely different and grouping us together as if a national boundary is the only thing separating us does a disservice to us as a people. It also makes it extremely hard to tackle issues that are unique to specific sectors of our tribe.

Lastly, this is not to downplay or disregard Jewish suffering. I simply wish to hear other's opinions on this very controversial issue.
