How exactly are the STCG and LTCG levied ?

I am an NRI and recently started investments in India in the form of MF and few stocks. Therefore, I haven't actually liquidated any of my investments. I don't have any other income apart from interest from banks, which comes around 1k per year. I was wondering when and how these taxes are levied if I liquidate my assets?
