How do i get of going on the boat, without causing problems?
I apologize for the rambling. A year ago we got a boat, it was "our" anniversary gift from my husband. I love to fish, I don't care what I catch. My husband and son, only count their catches if they are of a sport fish. We have only been on the boat maybe 15 times in the past year. My son (17) and I are not well versed in all that goes into being on a boat, and with the lack of consistancy of our voyages, it has been hard to get into a rountine. We have learned how to tie off the boat, put bumpers, throw and pull up the anchor, start and turn off the boat, clean the boat. Both of us are a little hesitant to "captain" the boat.
The last 2 to 3 times we have been out, have been a nightmare, more so for me. I have found that my ability to have foresight is lack luster. I try to help, but not quite sure what to do in a lot of situations. When i ask questions, or I am hesitant about repeating an action and will ask should i do it, i.e. if the guys are fishing and we are coming close to an obstruction, i will ask if i should move the boat. And my husband will snap at me, for doing something, not doing something, asking a question. He isn't normally like that, only while on the boat.
The last trip was really bad for me, just over all. So much so that i really do not want to go out again. When we got home, and everyone calmed down, it was made abundantly clear to me, that he believes the fault is all mine. I got called over bearing, childish, and basically an inept deck hand. The childish part came because again, going back to my example about moving the boat, after i had asked a few times (since we were coming close to other boats, docks, walls, etc) he snapped at me and told me he would tell me when to move the boat. The guys were fishing, following some rather large fish, at this point, i was over being snapped at, and was sitting quietly in the front of the boat. The boat was getting very close to a grove of trees and i didnt ask if i should move the boat, i didnt call out the boat was getting close, i just sat there. My son gestured for me to put the boat in reverse, and i stated that i wasnt going to move the boat. At which point my husband stomped up to the console and moved the boat. Later that night, he called me childish because i was going to let "our" boat crash because because i was angry. He expressed he was frustrated because we have had a boat for over a year, and he has not been able to catch a large fish. He said he wanted us to go out as a family and have a good time, but after hearing his opinion of what i was doing to make his time unenjoyable, i dont think he would ever enjoy me being on the boat no matter how hard i try.
This morning, my husband plugged the boat in to charge, i am assuming for us to go fishing tomorrow. After last week, i am not sure if i will even be "invited" to go out on it tomorrow, but i know i dont want to go. Im thinking of faking a stomach problem and just telling him to go without me, if it is implied he wants us all to go. I have a hard time of being insincere, or deceptive, so im not sure that would work. But i have already expressed that i dont have a good time on the boat which is definitely made worse by knowing that hes not having a good time when i am there. I know if i tell him that, he will express that the situation(s) wont be repeated, but, they happen almost every trip, not the same sceneros, but him getting frustrated or mad, and it effects the whole vibe. And i have a level of resentment for his reactions to everything.
Im not trying to throw blame, we mesh well in every other situation, its just on the boat is not good.
I guess what im asking for is, how to i navigate this situation? I dont want to go, but i do like the possibility of a good family boating trip, but i cant see the odds being in favor of that, given the history. But i also know he will try and talk me into going, unless i say im ill or something(which can only work so often and im also horrible at lying or deceiving). I want him to have a good time, but i also know he will feel some type of guilt if i dont go because of prior events, but he doesnt enjoy the boating, if his snapping amd frustration during the boat trip is any indication.
