Eight reasons I love your state
I've spent four summers living on-campus at a summer camp in Addison County, and while the natural scenery and kindness of the people shine always, I wanted to point out some less commonly-mentioned reasons why your state is a gem:
- Y'all pass in the shoulder lane when someone is turning left if available on two-lane highways (Rt. 7 especially). It just makes so much more sense, and keeps the traffic flowing. Once I came to expect it, I loved it.
- Rural farmstands. Eggs in a cooler, or a few plants, or some garden produce. They are ubiquitous and honor-system only, and most often not overpriced with too much bougie pretentiousness.
- Your Vermont Strong front plates are dope. And while political bumper stickers on both sides are present, it's typically a "one and done" political statement, not a wall of political vitriol.
- Y'all have the best local dairy producers (sorry, Wisconsin.) While I am partial to Monument Hill, I found the depth and breadth of local dairy products unmatched.
- The Trail scene is clean. While I avoided the high tourist traffic hiking areas, in general I found that the parking at trailheads was logical and not trash-strewn, the dogs were well-managed, and the toilet-paper on the back-country minimal.
- Man, y'all have some lovely flowers in your yards, While most houses don't do flower gardens, and there are plenty of eyesore yards, when you decide to make a front yard garden, there is no half-assing it. Some of the best yard flowers I have ever seen.
- BTV leaves a lot to be desired as far as flight connectivity, but nowhere else can I be in scenic farmland on Hwy.116 and five minutes later in the terminal.
- I love signed Class 4 roads. I've never been in the state in mud season, but I find the idea that there are roads which are nominally maintained, but welcome fucking around and finding out, lovely.
I could probably list more. It's a special place.
