Trail Pro II first impressions

Text

Just gonna list off a few things-

  • Wow, the tunable profile feature is no joke. Yesterday, I put it on and aired it up to the standard 16.5ish psi for my weight of 165. If I hadn't known better, I might have mistaken it for my maxxis 5.5. The TPII is insanely nimble at the 16.5 psi/165 lbs. combination. A bit too harsh through the chunder at this psi, though.

  • Dropped it down to 14 psi and took it for a short ride, today. This added a nice measure stability while still feeling nice and carvy. The harshness I felt at 16.5ish also became smooth like buttah at 14. It feels like something that will definitely win me over from the maxxis 6.5 at this psi.

  • The angle down to the shoulders from the contact patch is a little more mellow than the maxxis 6.5 that I'm used to, so carving requires less focus which is nice. I hope, like the salespitch says, this will also translate to harder and more locked in turns, but I need to heal up my slightly torn achilles before I ride it hard enough experience that. I don't think my podiatrist would be happy with me if he knew I was riding right now.

Now for the cons. There's really only one that I've noticed so far-

  • It's a DOGSHIT MAGNET. I've smashed two steaming piles with my brand new tire in the last 15 miles over two days doubling my pile-count over the last 4.5 months. Thank god I was running my new indestructible floatfender2. Hope they can fix this for the TPIII.

Conclusion-

I've only put in about 5 miles at a PSI that I would ride often, but I think it's on its way to becoming my favorite tire. It's crazy to me that one tire can feel so different with just a 2-3 psi difference. If I'm ever forced to ride pavement for some reason, I could see myself enjoying the higher PSI. Can't wait to tweak the tire pressure a little more to find the sweet spots.
