Does a comic story need to have some kind of deep meaning?

I've been telling myself "I'm just gonna do it. I'm just gonna sit down and start my comic", and of course the first thing I do is outline a story. I'll really like the story, then realize it has almost zero "deeper metaphorical meaning" and then scrap it to write a whole new story (usually set in the same world) and try to add some kind of social commentary or deep life metaphor because in my mind, it HAS to have that. Then as I write the story that all goes out the window and it's just another brainless fantasy/horror romp. I'll scrap that and then cycle continues. At this point I basically have a detailed account of like..a thousand years in this world that I keep writing stories for, but can't seem to do anything with because in my mind they basically equate to a fantasy version of the Resident Evil movies (which I DO enjoy quite a bit, but I seem to be alone in that). So basically, I just want other opinions. Does a comic story have to have some deeper metaphorical meaning or social commentary to be worth reading?
