new to elden ring and i have no idea what im doing

i just started playing yesterday and im not entirely sure what my objectives are, im playing as a sorcerer, and so far i’ve made it to the boss margit and have no chance in beating him. should i be looking for better weapons and armour? my boyfriend recommended that i look at guides but all of them are confusing me! and im not sure how to get and keep runes efficiently.
