Are electrics good for learning

If I want to re-learn saxophone in an NYC apartment where I don't want to bug people, is feasible now to learn on an EWI, or whatever they're calling it now?

I know I won't be able to practice hitting upper register stuff, but can I work on the basics? Or is the whole wind driven electronic stuff still just a gimmick?
