Locked down nagios display kiosk?

Have any of you set up a nagios kiosk before?

I need a kiosk to boot straight to the desktop and fire off the browser with the nagios page. The input should be locked, if you plug in a mouse it should pop up a login screen, or require a password to unlock.

Now this type of signage sounds like something that has to have been done a billion times, I'm just having a Google fail.

I'm looking at maybe a small Linux install with an rc to kick off firefox and xtrlock, but does anything else exist? Windows would be okay too if it worked.

Assuming you already have a display that will take either s-video or HDMI get a raspberry pi and case for like £30 run raspbian on it.

Set it to boot straight into X through the interactive menu on first boot.

Then apt-get chromium-browser and put "chromium-browser --kiosk <yournagiosurl>" in your .bashrc file in your user directory (e.g. /home/pi/)

That's what I did for my office, dependent on your display you can also power the pi off the built in USB ports on the display.

I have done kiosk installs for nagios before. And i few comments to get you started:

  • Use a fedora/ubuntu with minimum install, instead of a specialized distro (that usually does not have the same hardware support as the big distros)

  • If on raspberry pi, the browser rendering can be very slow. Have it boot straight into vnc that has a read-only display of a remote system.

  • Point 2 helps with your input problem as well.

How do you keep people from exiting the vnc viewer?

Its not a big problem if they do, xserver will reload and it will open up again :)
