Tongue Retaining Device + Sinus Issues = Suffocation Risk?
I would like to first mention that yes, I understand that most of the consensus is that these types of alternative devices don't work, are pseudoscience, etc. and that CPAP machines are the only real solution. However, due to circumstances beyond my control I am having difficulty getting one and have been for a while now. I am working on getting my CPAP, but for the time being I just need some kind of relief so I can actually sleep for once.
I recently ordered one of these Tongue Retaining Devices, one of those pacifier-looking things that use suction to pull your tongue out of your mouth and keep it in place while you sleep, since I realized that when I stick my tongue out I can breathe properly when relaxing my airway, as opposed to when I keep my tongue in while relaxing my airway.
The tongue retainer just arrived in the mail today, but I just realized a potential issue. I have sinus problems that occasionally make it so I can't breathe properly through my nose. Sometimes while I'm sleeping I wake up to find that I'd been breathing through my mouth, presumably because my sinuses kept me from breathing through my nose. This made me wonder, is it possible that if I use the tongue retaining device, I could suffocate to death due to my sinuses closing up and the device preventing me from breathing through my mouth?
