1. What version of Aegisub are you using?
2. Is your question about making YouTube captions (versus creating subtitles)?

Quick explanation for the questions above:

• It's easier to troubleshoot your issue if we know which version of Aegisub you're using because some issues are unique to specific versions of Aegisub.
• Troubleshooting issues for YouTube captions made in Aegisub is completely different than issues with subs that will only be used locally.
  It saves everyone's time if you state upfront whether you're making subs for YT versus a video on your device.

Helpful tip: The 2 most essential things for understanding (and/or creating) karaoke templates are having a basic understanding of tags, and learning how to create basic templates.
You will be able to create basic templates very easily once you familiarize yourself with Aegisub's tags, and by copy/pasting the examples from the pages above into Aegisub while following along.
