How do directors actually direct ?

I am going to direct my first short film. I can’t afford a dp so going to shoot it on my own with my camera. So how do I actually do it? Like after every scene i have to check the video then move to next shot ?

I know directors watch the monitors and decide whether to retake or move forward but as i have a small camera and going to shoot it on my own , i am confused
