Relatively new player. Any advice?

Question or Discussion

I've owned OW since like 2017, but mostly only played quickplay with friends once in a blue moon. Been trying my hand at ranked recently after I've been starting to get into the game again.

I'm probably like sub 50 hours in OW2, played my placements, and have recently been on a huge losing streak and my winrate in comp is very negative at the moment. Is this a normal experience? I placed in silver 1, climbed up to gold 2, then losing streaked down to silver 2 the last 2 days.

I don't really plan on making this the game I commit most of my time into and I mostly intend to play OW2 on the side of other things. I would honestly be content with hovering in high gold or plat.

When I played with a more experienced buddy or had them watch i was told that most of my losses were cause we had really bad DPS or tank diffs and that I wasn't really making many egregiously bad decisions. I usually play support and my main three are Lucio, Baptiste, and Illari. I like Lifeweaver and can service Kiriko as well too, but I don't feel as compelled to play them.

I still do think i'm definitely doing something pretty wrong though for me to be losing this much. this isn't my main game but I do enjoy it enough to want to not suck. I feel like these might be my potential weak points so any tips would be appreciated. A lot of stuff will definitely be fixed with more hours so I'm gonna try to focus on asking things with more direct answers.

  • My ult usage (particularly with bap and illari) feel lacking. I don't really have a great concept of how quickly I can farm up ults so it leads me to holding onto them more than i think i should be. Also, I feel like I don't make as much impact with my bap and illari ults as i should be.
  • Aim probably needs work since it's pretty inconsistent. Sometimes I can nail something with multiple headshots in a row and other times I can't hit a shot to save my life. I have some fps fundamentals from having played a lot of CS:GO in the past but Overwatch is a whole different beast with how much more things move and differing character heights and head positions. What is the best way to improve aim quickly? Practice range and the few aim training maps I've tried don't feel realistic at all cause of flat terrarin and things being 100% focused on dodging.
  • Not really sure how I should be positioning myself to keep both my dps and tanks active, but I often feel like I end up exposing myself more than i should be trying to do both. Sometimes it's bad teammates moment, but likely there's something I could be doing better.
  • I try to pick to what my teammates are playing and the map, so I generally don't put as much consideration into countering something on the enemy side when maybe I should be. One instance off the top of my head is my dps randos refusing to play anything with range into a pharah, so maybe switching to illari or bap in those situations and adjusting my target priority might be worth?
  • What do I do if i get a tank player who just constantly runs it down and leaves his teammates to get free dove? Lucio I find helps me play with those kinds of tanks, but usually if they're playing like that they don't tend to have much hands either. doomfist instalocks make the match feel so doomed sometimes because of how they tend to play but I gotta work with what I got.
