Radiation Therapy for Women of Color

Diagnosed Patient or Survivor Support

Please help! I’m looking for advice, reassurance, or recommendations from women of color who have been through radiation therapy.

53 Female of Asian descent. I am typically medium-dark tan in color. February 2022: Left breast DCIS, grade 1. ER 100%, PR 50%. Status post left lumpectomy. No residual disease noted. Stage 0, TisNx. Nipple saving lumpectomy in March 2022. Status post adjuvant radiation (16 sessions) - radiation dermatitis. Skin in radiation target area is black and blue resembling heavy bruising/burns.
January 2023: Follow up screening detected right breast invasive ductal carcinoma. Stage IA, T1b (10 mm) N0 (0/2). Invasive mucinous carcinoma. Grade 2. ER 100%, PR 100%, HER2/neu negative (0). Ki-67 of 12%.
March, 2023: Bilateral mastectomy inserted tissue expanders followed by implants replacement in both left and right breast August 2023. January 2024: Left breast implant cellulitis w/ staph infection. Status post implant removal and washout. Flat closure. Skin appearance remains black and blue.

I have been advised against another implant on the left breast. I sought a 2nd and 3rd opinion and have been offered a flap reconstruction in 2025. Has anyone experienced anything like this? After 2+ years, will my skin ever return to its original color? I used Miaderm cream during radiation treatment but still had deep discoloration. Thank you reading and any advice. Bless all of you. 💕 best wishes.
