[IL] was I sexist?
Recently I (woman) asked the most senior person in the office (man) if the business would provide pads and tampons. We had worked together somewhat closely for the past few weeks. His response was “I’ve never thought about that”, my response was, “that’s ok it’s a really male dominated firm so it’s not surprising”. This a true statement for the firm and the industry. We ironed out the details and continued on about the day.
Two weeks later he asked me to join him in a meeting. He proceeds to tell me that by saying “it’s a male dominated firm” I was sexist against him. He continues to aggressively explain why I’m sexist and how the business is not as it employs X amount of women. He then goes on to share a personal story about how he stands up to bullies. I’m so shocked I can’t say anything besides “thanks you for bringing it to my attention, that was not my intent, I’ll try and be more mindful of my language moving forward”. I did say I wished he would have brought it to my attention earlier, instead of waiting two weeks, and he said he was glad he didn’t see me because he was so mad he would have lashed out.
I ended up reporting to HR and explained I felt really uncomfortable and intimidated by the interaction. She gave me two options. To either have a mediated talk with him or keep it confidential. I said I felt uncomfortable talking to him so we decided to keep it confidential.
Is there anything else that should have been done? I’ve since quit and disclosed this was my reason for leaving. Was there actual wrong doing on his part?
