Should a galvanized driveway catch basin be encased in cement? We live in quebec with intense freeze and thaw cycles and we own a heavy SUV
Getting a couple of these catch basins installed. One in front of each garage door. They are 12” wide x 12” deep x 6’ long. My driveway is stone pavers. My specific question is should I insist these boxes be incased in 4” of cement with fiberglass red rebar? Many people say no cement just prepare the base well. My contractor says cement is not needed but suggested 2” encasement. I am leaning towards 4”. Why? Because of our freeze and thaw cycles and I will be driving over them with a 4400 pound suv daily. Many places i see the catch basins have sunk and I want to avoid that. I also see some catch basins made in concrete that look like they are original from 1957 when these houses were built.
Please advise
Also contractor said he will recess the catch basins 1/2” below the pavers? Is that a good or bad idea? I mean does hitting them when they are 1/2” recessed with the suv hit them harder than if they were flush with the pavers?
