Kholinar and the Unmade

Doing a reread of Oathbringer and I’m currently on the Kholinar mission. I’m wondering if there are any theories or explanations of the general corruption of Kholinar? For example, the erratic behavior of the guards as experienced by Shallan when she tries to infiltrate the palace with the letter from Elhokar.

Of course the unmade are still very mysterious. We know of some effects — Ashertmarn causes the revel, Yelig-nar gives surges to the wielder of the gemstone, Sja-anat corrupts spren (still not sure exactly what this entails). None of those directly explain the generally erratic behavior of certain of the residents of Kholinar while it is being occupied by three of the Unmade.

Perhaps it is simply the presence of three unmade in a relatively small geographic area that is causing reality to warp? Perhaps this is an undisclosed effect of Yelig-nar or Sja-anat?
