Trying to get Better to Play with My Friend

Title. I'm trying (and struggling) to get better at just basic shooting so I can play online with my friend. But I just can't get the handle on the aiming and shooting controls no matter what I do. I go into the training and to aim the shot but it's like the goalie just clips to the shot?

I know I'm getting older and I don't have the ole gaming reflexes I used to but man I'd really appreciate any help you can give.
