Dumb beginner question

When people talk about the exact settings a specific photo was shot with, are they actually noting this while taking the photo or is this info attached to the photo afterwards? I edit on a mac and have tried looking around in the photo info and I cannot find anything to save my life. I shoot raw if that matters. Thanks in advance!
