Feeling overwhelmed as someone who’s tonedeaf

NEWBIE

I used to play the piano, and took up guitar last year ago. I feel like I’ve gotten to the point where I can follow tabs and read notes, but I just can’t play chords well, and it overwhelms me knowing how there are multiple ways to play different chords. I’ve been trying blues improv recently, but seeing things like “blues in Em” has been overwhelming because I don’t know which chords to hit along the way and which notes, besides memorizing keys and playing what sounds like it fits for me. Which also sucks because I’m tonedeaf. When I played the piano, someone could play any key and I’ll be able to finish a song from that key but I wouldn’t be able to name which key. I would just magically know which notes to play. For example, you can start Fur Elise on a G key and I’d be able to play the song on that key by ear with my eyes closed, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you it’s the G key. And I’m currently having the same issue with guitar.

Should I study up on music theory?
