Why do we catheterize women during birth given risk of CAUTI?

I'm a UTI epidemiologist and after seeing two of my friends acquire a CAUTI (one of which was drug-resistant, and that delay in receiving an appropriate antibiotic resulted in sepsis), I'm surprised I have never asked this question. Given all of the absorbent padding/bedding/etc. hospitals are equipped with, why are women catheterized during birth? Especially when liquids are generally limited or restricted at that time anyway?
