Please Help - Can't Cool i9 13900k After Trying EVERYTHING
Specs:
- CPU: i9 13900k
- GPU: RTX 3090 FE (Stock)
- Cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420mm (properly mounted), Thermalright Contact Frame
- Case: Corsair 4000D RGB AIRFLOW (3 intake Corsair fans at the front, 1 rear Corsair exhaust fan, 2 NZXT AER RGB 2 exhaust fans on top)
- Room Temp: 70°F
I'm really struggling with cooling this CPU despite trying everything I can think of. I've already covered the basics:
- Applied high-quality thermal paste (reapplied several times).
- Updated to the latest BIOS, which fixed the microcode issue.
- Running stock clocks—I can't even imagine trying to overclock at this point.
- Set adaptive VF offset voltages in BIOS to -0.08 (made no difference).
- Disabled "Enhanced Turbo" (MSI’s version of Multi-Core Enhancement—also made no difference).
Here’s the issue:
- On PC boot-up, the CPU reaches up to 85°C.
- At idle, it sits around 45-50°C with only 5% utilization, even in balanced power mode in the control panel. Not a single core/package ever drops below 40°C.
- Voltage usually hovers around 1.2-1.3V.
In a 10-minute Cinebench 2024 multi-core benchmark, I scored ~1650 with stock settings. During the test, temps stayed below 90°C, with lower clocks and power draw (~250W), likely due to the benchmark’s AVX restrictions.
The Big Issue:
When gaming (Rocket League, CS2, Fortnite, etc.) at 1440p 144Hz with capped FPS, temps can quickly rise to 85-95°C. Setting short/long duration power limits to 240W brings temps down to 80-85°C at stock clocks.
I’m concerned that continuing to drop the power limit is the only thing that seems to help, but I worry this will impact performance at some point. Also, why is my Cinebench 2024 score so low even before setting power limits and with lower temps during the test?
I’m at my wit’s end with this. If anyone can offer some insight or suggestions, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
