A general guide on tracking your data across channels
Hi all Shopify fella :>>>
I know this topic isn't exactly new, but if you’re just starting to run ads to promote your Shopify store and are unsure whether your ads are truly converting or fitting into your overall marketing strategy, it’s time to start gathering your data. Here’s a general guide on how to do it:
Step 1: Choose a tracking and analytics platforms that suitable for you
First off, you need to choose a tracking and analytics platform that suits your needs. The key is to find a tool that’s simple to use, easy to integrate with your store, and offers valuable insights into your marketing efforts. Some basic options include Shopify Analytics, which is built right into your store, or connecting to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). However, be warned—GA4 can be a bit overwhelming for beginners due to the sheer amount of data it provides. If you’re looking for something more tailored and within a certain budget, consider apps like TripleWhale, Polar Bear (if you’ve got the budget), NestAds, or TrueProfit.
Step 2: Implement UTM parameters
Next, make sure you’re implementing UTM parameters on all URLs leading to your website that are used in your ads. UTM parameters are essential for tracking where your traffic is coming from and how your campaigns are performing. Most tracking platforms will generate these for you, or if you’re using GA4, you can use the Campaign URL Builder tool to create them.
Step 3: Add tracking pixels and tags to your store
Finally, to really get the most out of your data, you should add tracking pixels and tags to your store. These tools help you capture customer actions and, when combined with your ad data, provide a more comprehensive view of your customer journey. Shopify stores come with some basic tracking pixels and tags pre-integrated, like add_to_cart and purchase. But if you want to track more events, you can customize your theme’s liquid file to add additional code.
That’s the basic rundown of what you need to keep in mind when tracking your data across channels. With this data and the right tools, you can dive deeper into analysis, such as exploring customer paths or building funnels, to gain insights that can help you refine your marketing strategy and make sure it aligns with your store’s performance.
