Boyfriend and I broke up

My boyfriend and I just recently broke up and I am absolutely crushed. We both did not want this to happen. We broke up because of college and he’d be over 16 hours away. He won’t text me or call me because he “needs to get over it so we can be at least good friends in the future”. We’re supposed to meet up in December, but is it normal for a person just to stop communicating after a 1.5 year relationship when neither one of you wanted to break up?
