How do they unlock my phone so easily?

Both me and my partner have lost our iPhones and luckily both times they were found (by campus security and a lifeguard respectively). In both occasions they called one of us by going into call history. I am grateful that my phone was returned, but I just dont understand how did they unlock it so quickly, meanwhile Apple is bragging about how secured their phones are?
