am i being naive about this career path?
hi all, i'm 23 years old and for the past year or so i've seriously been considering going back to school to become a funeral director. i'm honestly more interested in the mortician aspect of the job, and less about the business aspect, but i understand that it's required to be well-versed in both nowadays.
i've always been a very pragmatic person, especially when it comes to people passing away (honestly, i have been diagnosed with adhd and i think i might have autism as well, maybe that's part of it?), but i very much understand that a lot of people find a lot of comfort and closer in funeral services for their loved ones. i'm very good at organization and cleanliness, i'm decent in a variety of art mediums which i think would help, and most importantly, i want to do something with my life that leaves me feeling like i'm helping people.
my only doubt here is that i'm being too idealistic about this career path. i understand that even for someone like me, who is very pragmatic about death, this career will take a toll on my mental health. i'm also worried about being too dumb to understand the classes and tests this requires of me, and about the hours—i've seen so many people say that this job will often require you to miss holidays, birthdays, etc. and my family is very important to me.
i still really want to hope that if i get through school, pass my exams and find somewhere to work, that it won't burn me out and consume my life. is that realistic? is going into this wanting to help people & give them closure the wrong way to go about it?
any advice would be appreciated!
