New migraine sufferer, really struggling and not sleeping
Hey Reddit,
Bit of background: Male, freshly 33, spent my birthday on Wednesday with a migraine that still hasn't let up. I have a history of mild headaches, but I'm actually not sure if this is a migraine or if it's something else. Hoping to find some guidance and reassurance.
Like I said I have a history of headaches, but back in April I cracked my neck the wrong way and developed the worst headache of my life. Couldn't stand up straight for more than a few seconds at first day, and spent about 2 weeks in bed. During that time, I began developing strange ocular symptoms, it hurt to move my eyes too far into my peripheral vision, and when I did so I saw flashes of light. Since then, my neck hurts most of the time, and the ocular symptoms have waxed and waned but never gone away (started in the left eye and then went into the right) and I've had a dull headache much more often than not. To me that sounds like optic neuritis, but a retinal scan at the opthalmologist in July came back clean.
Fast forward to the current migraine, if that's what it is, since Wednesday night I've woken up from sleep around 2 am, ~ 3 hours in, with a horrible throbbing headache pressure that is worst inbetween my temples and behind my eyes. On Thursday and Friday, standing caused me severe back pain (probably unrelated, I've always dealt with back pain) and laying down intensified the headache. I couldn't keep any food or drink down, so I went in to urgent care Saturday morning and was given an IV bag with a concoction of zofran, and two painkillers, one of which was specifically for the headache. Notably, it didn't affect my headache much, which had begun to subside on its own before the medicines came in.
When I got home, my headache was still there but dull, and I tried to sleep which made the headache worse. After 2 attempts at naps, I gave up and spent the rest of the day just trying to survive until bed time, and felt surprisingly good and headache free as I laid my head down around 10:30. I had some anxiety brewing about my night of sleep, but truly hoped the ordeal was over. Boom, 2 AM I woke up again with another horrible headache, this time purely behind my eyes. No nausea this time, but the flashes of light when looking left or right were brighter and happened easier. No position provided relief, except for being upright, and neither hot nor cold compresses had an effect.
To add on, I'm a heavy cannabis user trying to quit and since Wednesday haven't smoked. I had a theory that maybe it was CHS or withdraw related, so I caved and smoked at 5 AM this morning, desperate for relief, but it didn't do much. The pain was still there, but more distant, so I managed to drift into a dream but awoke in the middle of it with throbbing pain.
I'm now sitting in a hot bath with a cup of coffee just trying to keep it together, I'm sure you're all familiar with the despair that comes from night after night of horrible sleep. From reading posts on your subreddit I've seen how truly shitty migraine sufferers have it, and I know that what I'm experiencing isn't the worst of it.
Sorry for the wall of text. If you read it all, does it sound like migraine to you? Has anyone experienced something similar? I got a CT scan at urgent care that came back clean, and I'm planning on seeing a neurologist for an MRI. Anything I can do in the meantime to find relief?
