What happens to me after I shift?

I know that the "clone" (for lack of a better word) is the same as me, because it is me . So will I (the clone) know that I shifted ? Will my clone keep trying to shift and if so, is it possible for her to shift again? What if I have already shifted and I am the clone. I never understood this.
