Shinto: How to commune, invoke, tame, give birth to and live long enough to become a god
In Shinto, ALL things, even mortals and inanimate objects, have a spirit and all things are technically kami.
Other than power, the primary difference between kami and o-kami (i.e., the greater kami, who are both more powerful and more metaphysical) is that the o-kami live in the divine realm and are less exposed to the taint/sin/kagure of the mortal world.
Elden Ring seems to show several ways for relatively great kami to exist in TLB:
-
growing to become the oldest, largest and wisest of your kind - just like many yokai are mortal creatures (foxes, tanuki, cats and bears) that became supernatural after simply living for hundreds of thousands of years bears, tortoises and probably other creatures in TLB eventually become great enough to be considered kami themselves;
-
"communing" (i.e., fighting and killing) an animal kami - e.g, "bear communion" from killing Ragulea, Ornis "taming" a divine bird and Godfrey defeating Serosh;
-
invocation of a kami or o-kami to temporarily descend to inhabit a mortal vessel.
There are likely variations to invocation, but Japanese Shinto rituals often involve a male summoner (the Kannushi (a divine lord (of ritual)) and a female vessel for the o-kami (a miko or blind itako).
(Note: The vessel does not BECOME an o-kami simply because an o-kami resides with her: rather, for the duration of the possession, the o-kami is wearing the vessel's physical form.)
In Shinto there's a fourth way to bring forth an o-kami (or, rather, a partially divine child of an o-kami). In ancient rituals that have not been documented to occur in modern times. The offspring that results from divine "wedding" where the Kannushi had intercourse with a miko/itako while they are the vessel of an o-kami are viewed as the Kami's child.
P.S.: As embodiments of metaphysical ideals, being in the mortal world has a corrupting effect on an o-kami, which is why they only tend to visit for short periods of time.
Who knows what kind of havoc would happen if the o-kami of fate found themselves grafted permanently onto a mortal...
P.P.S.: There is a finally way: the path which Miquella took, which has little to do with Shinto and almost everything to do with Buddhism.
