Hello,
What mod's do you use? Why? What mod should new player try out first?

I actually use a full modpack, Roughnecks Megapack the link i provided is for his site, the actual mod pack is a bit further down.
I will try it out, hope it does not clutter screen too much.
I do warn you, it does change a lot of things, it was a shock at first but now i am used to and i find it a positive change.
I've installed this modpack and must say it really does add a lot of useful information. But there are a couple of strange things happening, all destroyed tanks now turn white and the new damage panel doesn't seem to work, it's kinda empty. Anyone an idea of how to fix this?
Yeah the white tanks think is normal, for me, it helps distinguish at range what bits of alive enemies are exposed, the damage panel is a bug, there is a fix in the mod forums, give me some time to dig it up a bit :)
for new player I would recommend skins with weak zones, something like this
could you recommend any specific ones?
I need one for KV-1, because this is only tank I can shoot for hours and do no damage, every1 else die.
Just type "hitbox skins" on google and you'll find what you're looking for. They're a waste of time IMO tho, literally. The extra time you spend looking for those little icons could be spent reloading for your next shot.
You would be much better off focusing on weak spots and trying to deal as much damage as possible, rather then the locations of modules. IE hatches, cupolas, MG turrets, rear, sides, lower front-plate (generally), etc. When you're proficient at penetrating tanks regularly, then you can start learning module locations.
Here's a helpful resource for armor schemes of most of the tanks, hasn't been updated since ~8.0 though.
Specifically for the KV-1.
Ok, I officially suck. I shot 10 shots to green zone just under the turret, I think he was afk or something. 2 shots penetrated, 1 did damage. I was in 75mm Stug III, I probably just have to improve my aiming :(
If you have an android phone look up the wot knowledgebase app. It has armor details on all the tanks as well as weak points and other stats. Wotguru is another website that covers armor weak points and where to shoot.
Well the 75mm guns that the stug uses has penetration values ranging from 100-150. They should slice through that plate like butter right? Not that easy I'm afraid, angle, distance to target, and RNG all affect your chance to penetrate. You'll get the hang of it eventually, we've all been there.
Check out the mechanics section of the WoT wiki for some bathroom reading. There's also guides I believe posted on this subreddits wiki focused on new players.
I use this one, sorry, can't find link on the English site. there is the list of tanks that skins will be applied to. this set not only shows location of modules but also, in orange, shows weak spots where you should aim if cannot penetrate in other places, like in this picture notice that commander cupola is orange and that is the weakest spot if you face Tiger II in front.
sorry for your KV-1 experience, this tank has very good armor for its level. in most cases you can apply some general rules to be sure that you will penetrate the armor:
lower front plate is almost always thinner then upper
aim "excrescences" in armor, like driver hatch, gunner/commander/radioman etc cupolas, machine gun hatch, etc
some parts in tank work as "screen": area near gun (in Russian it is called gun mask), tracks, screens on sides (on IS- >= 3, E-100 and relatives etc) even if you penetrate this area you will cause no damage at all, that's why avoid shooting tracks at any tank that name starts with "KV"
many tanks has tiny roof on hull and more common on turret, for example, front armor of IS-3 is 120mm where his turret roof AFAIK only 20mm, my gf killed once IS-3 driving M4A3E2 exploiting this fact
although skins can help it worth googling armor configuration of real tanks, in game they usually have same values, pictures like this can provide you detailed info about armor
don't forget about normalization!
Thanks for the tips. I have one question though - what exactly do you mean by "cupola"? Is this the hatch on top of the turret (the only orange thing I found on this photo)? I know that hatches are armour weakspots, but am I supposed to shoot it when the enemy tank is on the same level as mine, or is it limited to situations when I have a shot from above?
I'm sorry, I know this is a rather silly question, but I never quite got hold of this really.
yes, you understood me correctly. you must shoot these weakspots whenever there is huge chance that you don't miss, i.e. either your gun is very accurate or you're really close to the enemy. if you can shoot from above, you don't need weakspot because top of turret and hull usually is very thin. all you need to choose then is whether to shoot turret (to kill crew member(s) or break ammorack) or shoot hull in engine area (to set fire).
one more tip: if you're have access to very, VERY weak spot - switch to explosive ammo (don't know how it is called in English), then you will cause more damage. for example, type58 with explosive ammo can damage half more such tank as hellcat, where armor is just nominal:)
sorry, English is not my native language and I mostly play in Russian client
For looking up weak spots, you may want to check out http://wotguru.com/ or similar sites.
The 'weak zones' skins I've seen are all ones showing where the modules on tanks are located, not where their armour is necessarily the thinnest.
For the KV-1, hit the machine gun/view ports on the flat upper part on the front hull (slightly to the right side of it). These only have about 50mm protection.
Thanks, i try to search for those places, it's not easy tho :(
the very first version, where is painted a solid colour, had a weak spot, and modules, i think that meant it was thinner armor
Didn't even know this existed. Thanks!
HEy guys, i have a question regarding the weakspots mod. I used to download it here http://www.skins-wot.net/load/zona_probitij/16_02_12_shtrikhovannye_ehony_probitija_ot_krasnoj_zvezdy/206-1-0-560 (a russian site).
Nowadays you cant download it anymore normally (just with 64 kbit, and even that fails somehow), but you have to save it to "Yandex.Disk" to have normal download speed.
Does anyone know whats up with that and if this Yandex can be trusted? or have an alternative link for weakspots mods?
thx
yes, yandex has been around for a long time. it's kind of like AOL or yahoo in usa
A lot of the mods I use have already been listed here such as J1mbo's Crosshair and HR Gun Sounds but the majority of the mods I use are camouflage and inscription mods from WoT Customs. Since I don't find a lot of the basic camouflage patterns appealing, particularly the German ones, these mods are a subtle way of making the game better.

wow,
could you please post screenshot?
I would think that your screen is full of mod info, do you even see enemy ;)
Not sure if you're joking, but here's a quick in-game screenshot.
The only things that take up view space are XVM's Over Target Markers with Pogs' Contours. They could easily be disabled, but I like them as they let me know very quickly and easily what I'm dealing with.
No joke, I'm really new to this game and your list is quite big. I was afraid I would get information overdose.
You sure thats all?? I think you missed one. Check again :P
