How complicated is multiclassing for new players by your expiriance?

I ask this because one of my players who never made a charater, planned on making a hunter with psychic abilities, like visions and divination. I said, "okay we'll use ranger as a base and we'll work around that".
I know that the obvious choice is for him to multiclass into divination wizard, but he has almost ZERO game sense, in general. So i'm afraid to confuse him.

Also if anyone has other ideas, i'm open for it.
