This client should be referred out, right???
Without sharing too much, I have a new client who is the parent of a DCFS involved youth as a result of ongoing DV between my client and the youth’s other parent (both have perpetrated physical violence towards each other, but not towards the child). The client has an extensive and repeated trauma history in regard to violence. The client is mandated for services to be able to renegotiate custody of the child.
I am fresh out of grad school, finished up in May and started working in CMH in July. My supervisor and work environment have been overall supportive since the start, but this particular client is the first time so far that I have felt very strongly about referring out. One, I don’t have the experience or training to be working with a client on complex trauma. This should already be a red flag. Two, this client is black, which is not to say that black clients can only receive services from black providers, but black Americans have a VERY complex systemic history with DCFS and the justice system, and I feel that this client may be better served by someone with more experience helping minority clients overcome racial barriers in this system, especially if they’re doing so from shared, lived experience. Three, no one at my agency has specialized experience working with DCFS involved clients. How can I seek clinical supervision if my supervisors can only speak from a tiny handful of relevant cases rather than a career’s worth of specialization in these types of cases??
I don’t think it’s impostor syndrome, which is what my supervisor and another caseworker implied it to be the first TWO TIMES I brought up my concerns. I believe this client is deserving of a much higher level of care than what I am capable of providing. This case has been going on for years now, I do not want to delay it any further by running around in circles bc I don’t have the adequate experience, resources, or support. Am I crazy for thinking this should this client be referred out?? What can I say to my supervisors to really get these points across??
