Are old/large private servers safe in terms of getting your pc infected with trojans/viruses etc?

Hate the blizz, love the game so private server seems like a good solution.... Is there any way they could get into your pc by downloading the clients or something similar? Can they steal bank/card info and other such as with trojans etc? Thanks!
