Advice for my GF who's paying for her own school please!!!
Hi all! I'm not sure if this is where I should post this, but I was hoping someone might be able to offer some advice for my girlfriend's student loan scenario.
Basically, she and I both go to a highly-ranked public school. She committed before her financial aid package was released because it was widely advertised that families making under $100k a year would have to pay little to no tuition, and since that applies to the parent she lived with, she assumed she would receive the financial aid she needs. However, the CSS profile took her other parent, who is rich and lives in a different state, into account, despite her not receiving any financial aid from him or being dependent on him in any form whatsoever. She sent an appeal to our school's financial aid office, but it was rejected because a parent's willingness to pay can't influence how much you get in your package, meaning she's paying for the full cost of her schooling.
What should she do? She's currently taking out loans to pay for this semester, but she's stressed about having to go into extreme debt to pay for not only her bachelor's but also her master's down the line. She's been applying for scholarships, she might apply to be an RA next year, and I'm committed to helping her however I can, but it still might not be enough. She may have to transfer for financial reasons which would be super sad because we both love it here and also I would miss her tremendously---I'd understand if she has to do it, but we both would REALLY rather avoid that. Any thoughts? Is there any way she can avoid putting her other parent down on the CSS and maybe get a better package next year?
